If you’re trying to figure out how to start a non-toxic laundry routine, you’re in the right place.

For years we were told: “If it smells good, it must be clean.”

But many laundry products leave residues behind and those clothes stay in contact with your skin (and your family’s skin) all day long.

In this beginner-friendly guide, you’ll learn:

  • ingredients I try to avoid

  • why they may be a problem

  • what to use instead

  • and how to start slowly — without feeling overwhelmed

Laundry Ingredients Worth Paying Attention To

The problem isn’t using something once. The real issue is repeated exposure:

• a little bit

• from many products

• every day

• over many years

That’s why, when we look for cleaner laundry products, I pay special attention to these.

Fragrance / Parfum (often hiding phthalates)

Fragrance” isn’t just scent. It’s usually a mixture of chemicals that companies don’t have to fully disclose on the label.

Some people may experience:

  • headaches or migraines

  • skin irritation

  • respiratory sensitivity

Certain phthalates used in fragrances may act as hormone disruptors. With repeated exposure, they can interfere with hormones related to fertility, growth and development especially in children. That’s why, in a non-toxic laundry routine, I prefer choosing fragrance-free whenever possible.

Formaldehyde Releasers (DMDM Hydantoin, Bronopol, Quaternium-15)

These preservatives can slowly release formaldehyde over time especially when exposed to heat and moisture.

They may:

  • irritate skin and eyes

  • worsen eczema in sensitive people

  • irritate airways and cause discomfort

Because laundry touches our skin all day, I prefer avoiding products with these when possible.

Isothiazolinones

These are very common preservatives used to prevent bacteria from growing in products.

However, they can:

  • trigger contact allergies

  • increase skin sensitivity over time

  • worsen existing dermatitis or eczema

If someone in your home has sensitive skin, avoiding these may help.

PEGs / Ethoxylated Compounds and 1,4-Dioxane

These ingredients aren’t added “on purpose.”They’re created during manufacturing and sometimes leave behind a contaminant called 1,4-dioxane.

Concerns include:

  • possible absorption through the skin

  • long-term exposure risk

  • they don’t appear clearly on labels

Whenever possible, I choose detergents labeled 1,4-dioxane free or PEG-free.

The Solution: Keep Formulas Simple

You don’t need to memorize ingredient names.

To make it easier, I curated cleaner laundry options so you don’t spend hours reading labels.

Whenever possible, choose:

  • fragrance-free (not “lightly scented”)

  • short ingredient lists

  • no added dyes

  • no quaternium-15 or DMDM hydantoin

  • PEG-free or labeled “1,4-dioxane free”

We’re not aiming for perfection — we’re aiming for better than before.

How to Start Your Non-Toxic Laundry Routine (Step-by-Step)

If you feel overwhelmed, start with one product at a time.

Use what you already have and replace items as they run out.

1️⃣ Switch to a Fragrance-Free Detergent First

This is the easiest and most impactful swap.

My favorite: ECOS Free & Clear

Why I like it:

  • fragrance-free

  • hypoallergenic

  • dermatologist tested

  • Safer Choice Certified

  • plant-powered formula

  • up to 200 loads

How to use:

  • start with half the suggested dose

  • increase only if needed

  • wash on cold when possible

2️⃣ How to Soften Clothes (Best Option + Safer Alternative)

Let’s talk softness without unnecessary chemicals.

Best option: wool dryer balls

They help:

  • reduce drying time

  • soften fabric naturally

  • replace dryer sheets + softener

How to use:

  • place 3–6 balls in the dryer

  • run your normal cycle

  • reuse every time

But if you still prefer liquid softener…

Some people still like it and that’s okay.

ATTITUDE Liquid Fabric Softener — Unscented

  • plant-based

  • fragrance-free

  • gentle on sensitive skin

  • HE-compatible

Tip: use sparingly — not in every load.

3️⃣ Skip Chlorine Bleach — Use This Instead

Bleach whitens — but it can also:

  • weaken fabrics

  • irritate breathing

  • damage clothes

  • leave strong fumes

Better alternative: oxygen-based brightener

ECOS OXO BRITE — Free & Clear

  • chlorine-free

  • fragrance-free

  • Safer Choice Certified

  • brightens and deodorizes

I use it when I want whiter whites — without bleach.

4️⃣ A Safer Stain Remover

Puracy Stain Remover (Unscented)

  • fragrance-free

  • great for kids + baby laundry

  • works on food, oil, grass, and everyday stains

How to use:

  • spray on stain

  • wait 5–10 minutes

  • wash normally

Signs It May Be Time to Switch Products

If you notice:

  • strong perfume smell on laundry

  • itchy skin or rashes

  • headaches while folding clothes

  • irritation on kids

Small changes can make a difference over time.

My Simple Routine (For Inspiration)

  • fragrance-free detergent

  • wool dryer balls

  • fabric softener only when necessary

  • OXO Brite for whitening

  • Puracy for stains
